Eliaschev is the editor of perfil.com, a news website that is part of the Perfil press group. The attack is indicative of the terrible climate currently afflicting the Argentine news media. The press freedom organisation also condemns the arrest and beating of radio journalist Carlos Furman by police in the northeastern province of Entre Ríos on 13 September. Furman has been the target of threats and violence in the past.“We cannot take sides in the conflict between the Perfil group’s management and the Buenos Aires Press Workers Union (UTPBA),” the press freedom organisation said. “But its scale and violence show that it has clearly become much more than a journalistic dispute. The attack on Eliaschev, like Furman’s arrest, are symptomatic of an untenable climate of violence that refuses to let up.”Reporters Without Borders added: “It is high time that, in the run-up to the 28 October elections, that journalists, media organisations and the authorities undertake to work together to defuse the situation.”Perfil group journalists went on strike on 10 September over the dismissal of one of perfil.com’s reporters, Alejandro Wall. The company, which is headed by Jorge Fontevecchia, claims that because of journalists elections scheduled for 27-28 September, the UTPBA refused at the last minute to attend an 11 September meeting at the labour ministry that could have resulted in Wall being reinstated. The situation degenerated on 13 September. Dispatched to the UTPBA office to request an explanation for its no-show two days before, Eliaschev was attacked and beaten repeatedly, sustaining head injuries. According to the UTPBA, some of its members were the target of acts of vandalism and intimidation a few hours later by persons claiming to represent the Worker Party, which has links to the Perfil group.Eliaschev is the son of José “Pepe” Eliaschev, who had a programme that was taken off Radio Nacional on 30 December 2005 as a result of political pressure on the station’s management (see release of 5 January 2006). Last week’s attack is new blow to the Argentine press, which is already weakened by internal division and its strained relations with local and federal authorities. The programme director of FM 2 de Octubre, a local radio station in Santa Elena (in Entre Ríos province), Furman reported on 13 September that he had been arrested and beaten by police four days earlier, after receiving death threats. At the end of August, he had talked on the air about the profanation of a cemetery, which he said had been played down by the police. The police said Furman was simply arrested on a charge of “insult.” He was held overnight and was released on 14 September, after his lawyer intervened.Furman has often accused the provincial authorities of corruption and personal enrichment in his programmes. He survived a shooting attack on 10 June 2006, holing up in a Santa Elena hotel for three months, with a bullet-proof vest. July 6, 2020 Find out morelast_img read more

But for Puerto Ricans displaced in the aftermath of the disaster, long-term HUD funds aren’t going to address more immediate needs. Thus far, shelter for many Puerto Rico evacuees in areas such as Florida has been provided by FEMA’s Transitional Shelter Assistance program, which pays for hotel and motel accommodations while those affected by a disaster search for long-term housing. However, while FEMA had previously extended the end date for these services to March 20, The New York Times reports that the program will begin to expire for some of the affected families this week. The Times reports that nearly 4,000 families currently remain in hotels courtesy of the FEMA program, with around 1,500 of those families in Florida. Finding alternate housing in the Sunshine State likely won’t be easy, either—like many parts of the country, Florida is in the grip of an affordable housing shortage, one which has only been exacerbated by the influx of Puerto Rico natives fleeing to the mainland after Hurricane Maria.According to a National Low Income Housing Coalition study cited by cited by the Orlando Weekly, the Orlando metropolitan area ranks third in the U.S. when it comes to affordable rental homes, with only 18 affordable rental units available per 100 low-income families. With nearly 300,000 Puerto Ricans having arrived in Florida (per the state’s Division of Emergency Management), the situation is only getting worse.Democratic Congressman Darren Soto, a Puerto Rican whose district is located in central Florida, is petitioning FEMA to extend the program for the affected families through the end of the school year, and earlier this week he sent FEMA a letter to that effect, co-signed by Representatives from both parties. Rep. Soto told the Times, “With the program ending, we then have to argue for individual cases, and it becomes more cumbersome and people fall through the cracks.”When DS News originally reported on the then-looming original FEMA deadline, a FEMA representative said, “FEMA reviews each case for continuing eligibility every thirty days, depending on the need of each survivor the period under the TSA program will be extended and we will work to find permanent housing solutions.”According to the Times, “Most of the stays have been extended until March 20, but about 200 households have been alerted that FEMA would stop paying for their rooms as of Wednesday. The agency had already cut off assistance last month for some households after federal officials determined that their homes in Puerto Rico were habitable and had functioning utilities.”FEMA spokesman William Booher told the Times, “This is a bridge to other longer-term solutions. Survivors are responsible for their own recovery and to actively look for permanent housing solutions.”Meanwhile, Puerto Rico is on the cusp of a foreclosure epidemic, with data firm Black Knight Inc. in December reporting that almost one-third of Puerto Rican homeowners were behind on their mortgage, and 90,000 had become delinquent due to Hurricane Maria. There are currently foreclosure moratoriums in place for affected Puerto Rico homeowners, however those moratoriums are set to expire on March 19.last_img read more

first_img Press Association Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has opened talks with Turkish club Besiktas over a summer move, according to his agent. Cech has spent the season as second choice to Thibaut Courtois at Stamford Bridge and has only made five Barclays Premier League starts in Chelsea’s title triumph. The 32-year-old wants first-team football after 10 seasons as a Chelsea regular and Arsenal, Paris St Germain and Real Madrid have all been tipped as possible destinations for the Czech Republic international. But Besiktas also appear to be in the running. center_img “I have been in contact with Besiktas, we are in talks,” Cech’s agent Viktor Kolar told Turkish publication Fanatik. “Turkey is a choice for Cech, but we will decide when the league is over.” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wants Cech to stay at Stamford Bridge and he certainly does not want him to join a Premier League rival. “One thing is Jose Mourinho and another is Mr Abramovich (Chelsea owner) and another thing is the board because the board includes a little bit of me, a little bit of other people,” Mourinho said last week. “But if it was me, if it was my decision, my decision is Petr to stay. “After that, second point to go but not in England. The option I don’t want is for him to go to an English club. “But, I repeat, I am just the manager and he means so much for this club and what he did in this club I think he deserves everything from this club. “If the club decision is different to mine, I will accept with all the respect.” last_img read more

first_imgWhen all was said and done at the end of the 2016 season, the University of Wisconsin softball team found themselves short of an NCAA tournament bid.All hopes of a NCAA tournament appearance for the first time since 2014 ended when the Badgers suffered a 4-0 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers. But, considering the previous year when Wisconsin finished 21-31, their record of 28-24-1 served as a step in the right direction. It does not get much easier for the women in cardinal and white as the page turns to the 2017 season. Wisconsin released their schedule in early January, which includes nine teams that reached the NCAA tournament last season and four teams that finished the season ranked in the AP top 25.Softball: Badgers take one of three against Northwestern in final outing at GoodmanThe University of Wisconsin women’s softball team had a fairly momentous weekend, taking on the Northwestern Wildcats in their last Read…The Badgers will open their season with a series of tournaments and invitationals, the first of five taking place in the Ramada Uni-Dome Classic, where they will take on the University of Northern Iowa. Wisconsin will compete in these tournaments and invitationals into late March, when they will begin Big Ten play facing the University of Northwestern Wildcats in a three-game series in Evansville. The Badgers will then host the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers in a three-game series. Along with those two Big Ten foes, Wisconsin will square off against the Iowa Hawkeyes, Purdue Boilermakers, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Michigan Wolverines, Illinois Fighting Illini and Maryland Terrapins in pursuit of qualifying for the Big Ten Tournament. To accomplish this feat, Wisconsin must finish in the top 12 in the Big Ten.Moving forward, the Badgers will be without their ace from last season, Taylor-Paige Stewart, after she finished her eligibility. Stewart posted a 17-12 record with a 2.64 ERA in 42 appearances. Losing Stewart also means losing the leader in strikeouts, of which Steward had 145.The attention on the mound will now change gears to the returning pitchers, Kristen Stevens and Mariah Watts. Stevens turned in a 10-12 record with a 3.22 ERA in 38 appearances last year. Watts did not see the field as much as Stevens last season, however, only appearing in eight games and earning a 6.90 ERA.Softball: Freshman standout continues to make strides in debut seasonThe University of Wisconsin softball team won 21 games last season and at the time, Melanie Cross was playing softball Read…On the offensive side, Wisconsin welcomes back many contributors from the 2016 season. First-team All-Big Ten honoree Kelsey Jenkins will be returning as a junior. Starting in every game last season, Jenkins led the team in batting with a .409 average and tied slugger Chloe Miller for home runs. Miller, a second-team all-region recipient, also returns to the lineup, following a season during which she led the team in RBIs with 51 and a .355 average.Starters Sara Novak, Samantha Arents and Melanie Cross — three players who, combined, average .268 at the plate — are also returning. The Badgers owned a plus-56 run differential in the 2016 season. Wisconsin should have no problem scoring runs this season, though pitching remains up for debate. The season opener will take place next Friday on Feb. 10 against UNI in Cedar Falls, Iowa at 7 p.m. CT.last_img read more

first_img0Shares0000Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino scored 27 goals for Liverpool in the 2017-18 season © AFP/File / Lindsey PARNABYLIVERPOOL, United Kingdom, Aug 31 – Roberto Firmino will seek to end a rare goal drought when Liverpool take on Leicester although his manager Jurgen Klopp has no concerns about a drop-off in productivity. The Brazil international has formed one of the most feared forward lines in European football over the past 12 months with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. And the 26-year-old, signed for £29 million ($38 million) from Hoffenheim three years ago, has continued his excellent form in Liverpool’s 100 percent start to the campaign — three victories and three clean sheets in as many games.Yet despite scoring 27 times for last season, Firmino is still looking for his first goal of the new campaign even though Liverpool are the early Premier League pacesetters. The forward has not scored in eight games for Klopp’s side and in the Premier League has one goal in his past 10 appearances, a run that dates back to March. But Firmino’s selfless running has been singled out as one of the reasons Salah looks capable of continuing the prodigious production of last season, when he scored 44 times for Klopp in all competitions. The Liverpool boss says there is no sense of a World Cup hangover for Firmino, whose Brazil side exited the tournament at the quarter-final stage.“He had two weeks pre-season, which is quite short for a player who needs his physical fitness as much as Roberto does but I’m completely happy,” said Klopp.“After two weeks’ preparation and a Brazilian holiday he is much sharper and fitter than I would have expected. It is exactly how it should be in this moment and he can improve, like we all can improve.”Along with his mobility, Firmino’s eye for a killer pass has not been dulled by his exertions in Russia. His superbly timed pass against Brighton last week played in Salah, who scored the game’s only goal as Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League table for the first time in nearly two years.Klopp has stressed that Liverpool need to improve despite the 1-0 win, and the German must decide whether to name an unchanged starting line-up for the fourth consecutive game at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.Central defender Dejan Lovren, a World Cup finalist, is pushing for a return, although the impressive form of youngster Joe Gomez may mean that the Croatian faces another afternoon on the bench at Leicester. With Liverpool’s front three selecting themselves, Klopp has to decide on his midfield line-up — England’s Jordan Henderson has been unable to secure a starting place so far.Liverpool’s defence, boosted by the arrival of Brazilian keeper Alisson, has yet to concede and has the added advantage of not having to face Jamie Vardy, who announced his retirement from the England national team this week, due to suspension.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

So to help you out, we’ve selected and categorized the leading topic-tracking tools. This is based on the discussion that arose from our earlier post about topic feeds, which are RSS feeds for keywords or phrases.During the process of analyzing these topic tracking tools, we discovered – to our surprise – that not many of these services output results as RSS. Some of the leading apps in this field require users to visit their service. With that in mind, here is our full list and analysis.See also:Top Topic Trackers (Updated List)Feed and/or Email ServicesThese are services that output RSS and/or other formats, such as email notification. We think this type of topic feed tool is the most flexible, particularly when it outputs RSS. first_imgWhat it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Your friends are having a party. You’re not quite sure where it is, but all the details are in a Facebook Event invite. To get there, you’ll have to log into Facebook, find the invite and the address, load it into Google Maps and follow the directions. Social driving app Waze wants to make that process much, much easier. On Thursday, Waze announced new features that lets users navigate to any Facebook Event with single click. If you are logged into to Waze via Facebook Connect, you can just click on the event and Waze will direct you to the party. If you RSVP to a Facebook Event on Waze, directions will appear 48 hours prior to the event. If there is no address listed in the event, other guests can input the correct address. Waze will also show you the locations and timing of your friends who have RSVP’d to the event, allowing you to track their progress. (You don’t want to arrive too early, do you?)“One-tap navigation to Facebook Events is only the start… drivers will enjoy much more in upcoming versions soon,” promised Yael Elish, VP of product and marketing at Waze in a press release.Maybe There Is Something To This Social Driving Thing When I first mentioned Waze on ReadWrite, I was a bit skeptical. Social driving could not be a good thing, I thought. Paying attention to you smartphone while driving could be bad for your health. Waze looked interesting, but not the type of app that would capture millions of users and have to fend off billion-dollar acquisition offers (or, at least rumors of those offers) from the likes of Apple, Google and Facebook. I was wrong. Waze now has 49 million users, its crowd-sourced maps technology is in high demand and many people are addicted to it. Social driving can save you time, keep you out of accidents and reduce the risk of being pulled over for speeding. And now it can lead  you easily to Facebook Events. The Facebook ConnectionRecent rumors had speculated that Waze would be acquired by Facebook for $1 billion. Talks have apparently broken off as most of the Israel-based Waze team didn’t want to move to Facebook’s Menlo Park, Calif. campus. (Waze also has an office in Palo Alto, Calif.).Still, except for the whopping price tag, the acquisition would have made a lot of sense. All of biggest consumer technology companies have some type of mapping technology. Apple and Google make their own maps. Microsoft teams with Nokia for its maps and Amazon also licenses maps from Nokia for its Kindle Fire tablets. Facebook has nothing in its technology stack for navigation or location (it does integrate some Google Maps for addresses). Waze would have been a complimentary piece to Facebook’s developer tools as well as a boon to its core platform (for things like Facebook Events, as today’s recent Waze update shows). Facebook has gone out of its way to give developers more tools to build on its platform, naming a series of preferred technology partners and buying mobile cloud services company Parse. The ability to add a software developer kit (SDK) for maps through Waze straight into Facebook’s platform would have been a real boon to the social giant’s app ecosystem. If Facebook cannot close the deal, Waze becomes a tantalizing fruit to be plucked by one of its rivals. That would be a shame for Facebook. As Waze has shown with its Facebook Event integration, the two might have made brilliant partners.
